The Kinjarling (Albany) Coast is like no other, boasting stunning natural beauty and unique features, rich biodiversity as well as an outstanding renewable energy potential.
The Great Southern Science Council is hosting a free-to-enter photography competition that seeks to inspire the exploration and celebration of our exceptional coastal environment and all it has to offer. Help us to showcase these many natural and sustaining values of the Kinjarling coast.
Capture the power of physics and maximise your camera’s capabilities to bring the extraordinary to light. This is a great opportunity to learn, practice, teach and inspire others. Plus there are awesome prizes to be won!
The photo competition has three categories:
1. Wooyan Gaba (Blue Ocean) and the hinterland - documenting the diversity of marine ecosystems including flora and fauna above and below the water
2. Sustainability / Under threat - examples of sustainable and renewable resource development and or and an exploration of the impact of human activities on the environment, for example climate change and ocean plastics
3. Youth - an open category that provides an opportunity for younger participants (under 16 years) to showcase their photographic skills and creativity
Winners of each category will receives $150, with second place receiving $100 and third place $50.
Entries close at midnight on Friday 9 September 2022.
Winning entries from each category will be exhibited at the Albany Public Library (first floor) from Saturday 24th September, for the duration of the school holidays and during normal library opening hours.
Images with photographer credit will be shared on the Great Southern Science Council web site www.greatsouthernsciencecouncil.org.au/
The entries must be submitted electronically to greatsouthernscience@gmail.com in accordance with the competition guidelines and subject to the competition rules.
Competition rules
The contest is open to entrants of all skill levels.
A maximum of 3 entries per person is allowed.
Our competition emphasizes technique, creativity and unique images, so we highly encourage photographers to avoid familiar or iconic compositions.
Photo contest staff and judges are not allowed to enter the contest.
Each individual can only win one prize.
Entry images must be taken within the Kinjarling Albany Coastal region and hinterland within the past 12 months
Images must be accompanied with location of the image and a sentence or two on why this subject was chosen.
Images that have already been published, won or placed in photo contests may not be submitted.
Winners will be announced at the opening exhibition evening in Albany and featured on social media.
Conservation Rules
Conservation rules will be strictly observed. All entries must be captured in accordance with local laws and regulations including any permits, licenses and permissions (including drone laws).
Flora and fauna should never be stressed or endangered for the sake of a photo. Entries suspected of exhibiting the following behaviour will be disqualified:
Photographers visibly damaging the environment (e.g. gear dragging or kicking up sand)
Animals with signs of stress (e.g. inking octopus)
Animals moved to an unnatural environment or risky location
Marine life being touched (e.g. nudibranchs, coral polyps, seahorse tails)
Divers exhibiting poor buoyancy control
Image Preparation
Minor post-processing images is allowed. This includes global adjustments to exposure, contrast, burning, dodging, cropping, sharpening, noise reduction, and tone. Images that appear to be overly processed may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion. Judges may request submission of raw files or original jpg files for comparison.
Photo Submission Guidelines
Entries must clearly state which category it is entered
Entries must be submitted digitally, saved in jpeg format (max 10 MB)
Entries must be wholly original work and under sole ownership
Use the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space
3000 px or higher on the long edge
Image must have been taken in the last 12 months
An image can be uploaded into one category only.
Images must not contain borders, watermarks or signatures
